Probably the worst VIN plate of any vehicle I've ever worked on! Even the good ones are difficult to read, when they're corroded it's nigh-on impossible. The thread linked above covers tips to make them legible IIRC, digital images can also be manipulated to make the VIN more legible - black and white works well.
Something I meant to do when I last had need to check the VIN on my Velo was to stamp it properly, with actual stamps, somewhere else on the frame before the VIN plate number finally disappeared.
Whose bright idea was it to put a bare metal VIN plate in an acid-rich environment!!

Most Velociferos made after 1996 and fitted with 10” wheels will feature the dreaded etched dots chassis / VIN number next to the battery tray. Pre 1995 machines feature stamped chassis numbers on the tube frame plate and are more durable, larger and legible - better even than Piaggio’s PX scooter chassis numbers. No doubt Italjet’s change to etched dots was done on cost/quicker turnaround times at the Indian factory, but at the price of quality. Last year, while attempting to recover the chassis number for another online owner, I hit upon the same idea that Luddite mentions above. I managed to source blank Italjet VIN plates from a northern UK scooter dealer, but put off the purchase as I wanted to know the dimensions of the plate. My email enquiry went unanswered and I let matters lapse, until I decided to go ahead anyway. Sod’s Law - by then they were no longer available. However, I strongly suggest that any owners of a machine that has the etched dots VIN number, to apply an additional VIN plate. There are a variety of blank plates available including a stamping/engraving service at additional cost. SIP Scootershop in Germany has this itemSome traditional scooter clubs may have a set of the number/ letter punch set chassis stamps for member’s use, or you could try the engraving services at your local locksmith/key cutting shop. Some territory markets demanded additional chassis plates like Italy and Germany - but ironically, this did not become an EU wide directive!!! The US customer was better served with a VIN sticker applied to the legshields and/or another plate riveted to the chassis. HTH

I’ve rediscovered the source of blank VIN plates complete with the Italjet logo. What better way to present your chassis number and make it look like it was fitted by the factory. The one drawback is that only short runs of these chassis plates are released online - normally on that well known internet auction site. Twice I’ve missed out for being too slow off the mark, but I’ve finally made an order and secured a couple. The plates require holes drilled for fitting to the chassis with rivets, and stamping the chassis number and a couple of other details. I would suggest fitting the new VIN plate to the left hand flitch plate which braces the chassis tubes up from the engine pivot mounts and where you’ll find the horn mounting. The online auction item number is: 233365884973 - four items still left as I type this. Otherwise, contact the seller direct via his website at: vinplatetag.co.uk or email: info@vinplatetag.co.uk
